The City of Sherwood has been awarded $4 million in surface transportation block grant funding by Metroplan for roadway improvements on Jacksonville-Cato Road. This is the largest award among nine cities and two counties sharing a total of $17.35 million in funding.
Sherwood must match the grant with $1 million and is responsible for the design, environmental approval, and 100% of the engineering costs for the project. The improvements will focus on enhancing safety and connectivity for local residents.
Construction is expected to begin in 2025, once the city, in coordination with Metroplan, the project engineer, and the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), develops a detailed project schedule.
Metroplan's board of directors selected the projects after evaluating applications submitted by August 28, 2024. As the metropolitan planning organization for Central Arkansas, Metroplan administers the Transportation Improvement Program for the region. This program ensures that federal transportation funds are distributed based on regional priorities and a competitive selection process. The block grant program awards 80% federal funding with a local match of at least 20%.
The Jacksonville-Cato Road Improvements Project is another step in Sherwood's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and supporting long-term growth.
