The Sherwood Mayor's Youth Council

The City of Sherwood Mayor's Youth Council program is a youth volunteer and leadership program designed for 10th-12th grade high school students to connect with municipal leaders, develop leadership skills, and volunteer for their local community. The program runs through the school year (September - May), and it gives students a guaranteed 24 volunteer hours for any graduation requirements.

Volunteer Events

  • Three (3) volunteer hours are required each month.
  • A minimum of twenty-four (24) volunteer hours are required overall.
  • Approved volunteer hours for the program include non-profits, local businesses/causes, Mayor's Youth Council meetings, City Council meetings, and city facilities and events.
  • Volunteer hours through other extracurriculars will not be approved for this program.
  • The Sherwood Mayor's Youth Council will host one Group Volunteer event a month, either through a city event or an event sponsored by the program, and attendance is required.
  • Students must attend one (1) City Council meeting during the program.
  • Volunteer sheets are given to students to document their hours, and the program coordinator signs off on these volunteer sheets for students in the program.

MYC Monthly Meetings 

  • The Sherwood Mayor's Youth Council meets on the first Tuesday of the month throughout the duration of the program.
  • These meetings host one guest speaker, either an elected official or City Department Head, for students to connect with through conversation, advice, and insight.
  • These meetings also cover important information such as volunteer events and opportunities for the month, as well as the chance for students’ volunteer sheets to receive signatures for submission.

  • To connect and engage with your local community, municipal leaders, and peers.
  • To exemplify leadership in your community through responsibility, commitment, and positivity.
  • To volunteer and serve others with compassion, respect, and generosity.
  • And most importantly: to have fun!

Minimum Requirements

  • The student must be a Sherwood resident OR attend a school in Sherwood.
  • The student must be in high school in grade 10th, 11th, or 12th.
  • The student must be able to follow through with the program's requirements for volunteer events and monthly meetings as stated above for successful completion of the program.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Sherwood Mayor’s Youth Council is to encourage civic and community involvement by bringing together teen leaders through volunteer service and collaboration with municipal leaders.

Members of the Youth Council will be selected through an application process, prioritizing students who demonstrate a commitment to making a difference in our community. Selected students will be expected to attend monthly meetings, volunteer at designated events, and complete three (3) hours of community service each month to maintain their membership. Their generosity and enthusiasm are invaluable assets to our city.
